36 Hours unfolds in the critical days before the Normandy landings in June 1944. U.S. Army Major Jefferson Pike (James Garner), privy to the Allied invasion plans, is sent to Lisbon to gather intelligence. Pike awakens in what appears to be an American military hospital, seemingly in 1950, years after the war has ended. A German psychiatrist, Major Walter Gerber (Rod Taylor), convinces Pike that he is suffering from amnesia as a result of being tortured. Gerber claims that Pike’s memories can be recovered through therapy, subtly pushing him to recall events leading up to and including D-Day.
To sell the illusion, the Germans create a meticulously crafted environment, complete with American personnel, newspapers from 1950, and even a “wife,” nurse Anna Hedler (Eva Marie Saint), a former concentration camp prisoner coerced into participating in the charade. Now aware of the ruse, Pike finds himself in a desperate race against time to outwit his captors and prevent the crucial invasion plans from falling into the wrong hands. He must convince the Germans that he was lying about Normandy while simultaneously plotting his escape.
