Tommy Williams urgently wants to make it to Broadway, but he is a long way from there because he is simply singing in a spaghetti house for tips. He meets Penny Morris, a talented singer, and gets the idea to promote a play to send orphaned youngsters on a country holiday. However, Penny quickly sees that he is merely using the kids to get on with himself. Life can be difficult when his romance is over, he has an engagement in Philadelphia that he cannot attend, and there is war in Europe.
