Billy the Kid unfolds in 1880s New Mexico, amidst a heated conflict between cattle barons and local farmers. William Bonney, known as “Billy the Kid,” is a renowned gunslinger who helps his friend Pedro Gonzales escape from jail after he was unfairly imprisoned by Sheriff Cass McAndrews.
Billy is then hired by Dan Hickey, a ruthless cattle baron, to intimidate farmers into joining his enterprise. However, after a stampede orchestrated by Hickey’s men results in the death of a farmer, Billy is overcome with guilt.
Seeking a different path, Billy finds work at the Keating ranch, run by Eric Keating, a pacifist. Here, he befriends Jim Sherwood, an old childhood friend who works for Keating. Billy also falls for Eric’s sister, Edith. However, Billy’s newfound peace is shattered when Pedro is murdered by Hickey’s men. While Keating urges Billy to seek justice through peaceful means, Keating is soon killed, prompting Billy to seek revenge.
As Billy hunts down those responsible for Keating’s death, Jim appears to switch sides, leading to the arrest of Billy and another of Keating’s men. After escaping from jail, Billy and his companion track down and kill Keating’s murderers. This leads to a confrontation with Jim and Hickey, resulting in Hickey’s death at Billy’s hand.
The story culminates in a final showdown between Billy and Jim. In a twist, Billy intentionally draws his gun with his weaker hand, allowing Jim to win the duel and kill him. Billy chooses to die rather than harm his friend, ending the feud.
