Carry On Constable follows the story of Sergeant Wilkins, who is under pressure to maintain staffing levels at his suburban police station amidst a flu epidemic. Relief arrives in the form of three new recruits, fresh out of training school, but their arrival is anything but smooth.
The new constables – PC Stanley Benson, a self-proclaimed intellectual and amateur psychologist; PC Tom Potter, a former playboy; and PC Charles Constable, an extremely superstitious officer – inadvertently assist bank robbers in their getaway, setting the tone for their accident-prone escapades. The arrival of WPC Gloria Passworthy, with whom Constable falls in love, and Special Constable Timothy Gorse, adds further to the comedic chaos.
Out on the beat, the new constables try their best, but their efforts are consistently undermined by their incompetence and quirky personalities. Benson nearly arrests a plainclothes detective, Constable believes he has heard a murder being committed (but it turns out to be a radio play), and Potter finds a young woman in the bath while investigating a supposed intruder. Gorse struggles to control his police dog, adding to the general mayhem.
With their careers on the line, they get a lucky break when a wages robbery takes place. Benson and Potter locate the getaway car, leading to a confrontation with the thieves, resulting in their arrest and the recovery of the stolen money. The film concludes with Inspector Mills being promoted, Wilkins taking his place, and Constable Constable finally getting the girl, while also overcoming his superstitions.
