The film tells the story of Joe Clay (Jack Lemmon), a San Francisco public relations executive, who meets Kirsten Arnesen (Lee Remick), a secretary. Kirsten, however, remains unable to overcome her addiction. In a heart-wrenching climax, she visits Joe, seeking reconciliation. Joe welcomes her back only if she commits to sobriety, a condition she refuses. The film concludes with Joe’s resolve to maintain his sobriety, even if it means losing Kirsten.
